Welcome to Black Dog Acre Farm!
I’m Sarah, and those are my two farm dogs, Gravy and Tater. We live and farm on a small piece of land in King William County, Virginia. We are passionate about feeding our community!
Did you know that there were 188,000 people living in King William and our surrounding counties in 2020? And did you know that King William and those surrounding counties spend an estimated $56 million on food every month?
Many market farms in the area travel to the big cities to make profits. But we believe our rural community is worth catering to, and is capable of supporting small farms. The folks in King William, King and Queen, New Kent, Caroline, and Hanover need to eat just the same as people in Richmond, Williamsburg, and Fredricksburg!
We sell at events in the city sometimes, but we always prioritize markets in our community. And we love how welcoming our community has been! We’ve been selling at the market in West Point for three years now, and our neighbors show up and support us every week.
What is regenerative agriculture and why do we do it?
Regenerative agriculture focuses on improving the soil, increasing biodiversity, and healing the land from past misuse.
At Black Dog Acre we work towards these goals by practicing no-till methods to keep all the good stuff in the soil, choosing fertilizers and pest management products that are natural and safe, and growing and encouraging a diverse community of plants (weeds included!).
It’s become apparent already that the ecosystem on the property is in better health. I see more native plants and different types of insects popping up all the time, things I never saw on the property prior to farming, such as dung beetles and leaf cutter bees.
